The container is a vital component in the value chain of any manufactured product, as it facilitates the handling and use of the product, provides mechanical protection and against external agents, and it also promotes the product and provides the consumer with information on its main characteristics.
In the area of European environmental policy, the container plays a crucial role in the transition towards a circular economy, as it protects and conserves the products while maintaining the efficiency of the resources throughout the value chain. Therefore, a new trend is underway that indicates that, along with cutting energy and material costs, sustainability is and will be one of the main levers of innovation and competitiveness in the packaging supply chain.
In this changing context, ecodesign, that is facing the challenge of sustainability from the point of view of eco-efficiency, emerges as a key tool to develop containers.
